One night, while Holden is driving Alyssa back to her place in New York, Holden suddenly snaps; he’s decided friendship is just not enough for him, and tells Alyssa that he’s in love with her.“I know that you think of me as just a friend, and crossing that line is the furthest thing from an option you would ever consider, but I had to say it,” he says.
“I can’t take this anymore.”Holden assumes that Alyssa can simply choose to strike up a relationship with him. Her lesbianism, by this point in the film, has been extremely well-established — to everyone, it seems, except Holden.
Duane Andersen’s “Superpowerless” isn’t even the first film to weigh in on the inherently unspectacular notion of “super” midlife crisis, though it’s a far cry from the epic fantasy sprawl of “Watchmen” or the even more meta commentary in the margins of “Birdman.” Instead, this effects-free indie seriocomedy focuses on an ex-crimefighter who’s lost his “powers” — and his general mojo — at that classic fortysomething juncture where some men experience panic or depression over the roads not taken.
This erstwhile “Captain Truth” can no longer fly, literally or otherwise.
His movie, too, remains a little too stolidly earthbound — just a bit of fantasy liftoff would have been appreciated in a story that finally lands in a predictable place after going nowhere very surprising, especially given the offbeat premise.
Still, “Superpowerless” sports enough low-key charm in performance and situation to appeal as a change of pace for more adventurous genre fans.
The clientele is young, wealthy and confident, dressed in the height of late-eighties style: pouffy Lacroix dresses, slinky Alaïa, Armani power suits. WAITER With goat cheese profiteroles and I also have an arugula Caesar salad. Mc DERMOTT Because Bateman won't give the maitre d' head.
For entrées tonight I have a swordfish meatloaf with onion marmalade, a rare-roasted partridge breast in raspberry coulis with a sorrel timbale... Mc DERMOTT (Staring at retreating waiter) Did he just take our plates away? (He guffaws) Bateman throws a swizzle stick at him.
PATRICK BATEMAN, TIMOTHY PRICE, CRAIG MCDERMOTT and DAVID VAN PATTEN are at a table set for four. Right now I'm in a bad mood because this is not a good table, and Van Patten keeps asking dumb, obvious questions about how to dress.
